ORANGE ROCKS OCEAN PHOTOGRAPHY

My name is Terence Pieters, and I’m an ocean photographer from a small coastal town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

When I was younger, I spent my days surfing. I loved riding waves—nothing made me happier. But while I was out in the ocean, I found myself noticing moments that seemed to go unnoticed by everyone else: fleeting glimpses of magic when a wave would suddenly flare, break, or catch the light in a certain way.

I wanted to pause those moments so I could really look at them.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, but that fascination eventually grew into something much bigger when I discovered the art of photography. Something about it felt completely natural to me. I found peace, meaning, excitement and pure joy in capturing these moments, and I wanted to share that feeling with the world.

TWO PASSIONS, ONE OCEAN

For years, I was torn between surfing and photography. Whenever I was in the water, surfing would usually win.

But over time, injuries forced me to take a step back from surfing. At first, it was frustrating, but looking back, I see it as a blessing in disguise. It gave me the opportunity to focus on photographing the waves instead—and eventually, I found a way to combine both of the things I loved.

Today, I capture the ocean from within it.

And being in the water with a camera is a completely different experience.

You have to understand the ocean—its currents, tides, swell, movement and ever-changing conditions. You need to know how the waves are behaving, while also being aware of the surfers around you and knowing how to move safely through the water.

All of this happens while swimming in the open ocean without a flotation device, carrying a heavy and expensive camera, and simultaneously thinking about exposure, focus, timing and composition.

It can be challenging, but that's also what makes it so rewarding.

EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT

Some days are easier than others.

When the waves are smaller and the ocean is calmer, I have more time to think about the technical side of photography—to study the light, consider my composition and wait for the right moment.

On bigger, more intimidating days, my priorities change. I'm focused far more on my surroundings, the movement of the ocean and simply being in the right place at the right time.

Sometimes I might come home with only one photograph I'm truly happy with.

But I’ll also come home with a story, an experience and a moment that I’ll never forget.

And sometimes, that is just as valuable as the photograph itself.

SEEING THE OCEAN DIFFERENTLY

The beauty and uniqueness of every wave is endless.

Seeing the ocean from land is one thing. Being out there, surrounded by it and experiencing its power up close, is something completely different.

It has given me a new appreciation for the ocean and an entirely different way of seeing it.

Through my photography, I hope to share that perspective with you—to give you a glimpse of those fleeting moments I first noticed all those years ago, and to hopefully make you feel something when you look at them.

WHY THE NAME ORANGE ROCKS?

Orange Rocks is a well-known fishing spot on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. For those who know the area, it’s a beautiful place where you can experience the ocean up close.

It is also where my journey into photographing waves really began.

Before I was able to take my camera into the ocean, I would stand on the rocks and photograph the immense power of the waves crashing against them.

Those rocks were where I first started looking at the ocean differently—searching for those brief, beautiful moments hidden within the chaos of the waves.

That’s where Orange Rocks began.

And today, the name is a reminder of where it all started.
